Highlights from 2018 Community Outreach

Dec 18, 2018

DAVIS takes great pride in serving our community, and our commitment is evidenced by the long-standing relationships we have built and the productive partnerships we continue to build. We have worked with and supported local organizations and nonprofits for over 50 years, from Rockville to Washington, DC and beyond.

We’re proud to have a continued impact throughout the DC metro area with our active involvement and support of the following charities, nonprofits, and fundraising events. This year, we established new relationships with vital organizations including Cavalry Women’s Services and Warrior Canine Connection.

In addition to financial contributions and extensive in-kind donations, our employees and interns contributed 1,250 hours to over 75 organizations and philanthropic initiatives in 2018.

ALS Association DC/MD/VA Chapter

The ALS Association is dedicated to providing assistance to patients and their families afflicted with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease, researching new treatments, and finding a cure. Along with our longtime partners at Gensler, we were honored at the 2018 Dine to Defeat ALS event and collectively raised $350,000 with the help of our clients and subcontractors. In October, we sent a group of volunteers to participate in the DC Walk to Defeat ALS.

"Having the chance to spend time with people who have been directly affected by ALS, whether it be the patients, their family members, or the staff, we know how the funds raised are helping to make a difference in lives." – Jim Davis, DAVIS President + CEO

Calvary Women’s Services

Calvary Women’s Services who empowers homeless women in DC to transform their lives through housing, health, education, and employment programs. We assisted with Calvary’s 2018 Home for the Holidays holiday furniture drive and will be sponsoring Calvary’s 2019 Hope Awards Dinner.

DCBIA Community Improvement

Each year, hundreds of industry employees come together with the DC Building Industry Association to revive a public gathering place for an underserved neighborhood. In September, we donated $2500 to DCBIA’s annual Community Improvement Day (CID) at Keene Field in Ward 5. DAVIS volunteers came together with industry peers to help renovate this Bilingual Public Charter School’s open field primarily used by the surrounding community to play soccer and host community events. Our very own Steve Hawryluk served as President of DCBIA Community Services Corporation, lending his project management leadership to the CID efforts. In addition, we donated to DCBIA’s Christopher H. Collins Scholarship and had volunteers participate at this year’s Care and Share program.

DAVIS Annual Charity Golf Tournament + Warrior Canine Connection

Our Fifth Annual Charity Golf Tournament took place in October with 125 participants representing over 34 long-time partners and subcontractors. With the help of generous sponsors, we raised over $70K this year. The proceeds were donated to the Warrior Canine Connection (WCC), an organization that helps wounded warriors suffering from post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries reconnect with life, their families, and their communities through service dogs. At the dinner and closing program, a Navy Veteran moved the crowd during his speech about how WCC saved his life with his dog alongside him.

"Seeing the support of everyone at the tournament gives us hope that our new home will become a reality - we appreciate everything that DAVIS is doing for WCC." – Kim Vaughn, WCC Director of Facilities

Jubilee Housing

We were proud to work with our long-time friends at Jubilee Housing again this year. We provided holiday gifts for 30 family members through the Jubilee Housing Wish List initiative and volunteered for the Elf Store, providing children of Jubilee Housing the opportunity to buy gifts for their family at a significantly reduced cost. DAVIS employees volunteered their time, and as an organization we donated $1K toward gift purchasing. We also contributed to Jubilee’s Back to School Store, providing school supplies for Jubilee Housing residents.

Nourish Now

For the second consecutive year, we partnered with local nonprofit Nourish Now. Along with company-wide food collection and donation, volunteers spent a day packaging holiday meals with Nourish Now team members in November. Leading up to Thanksgiving, we donated 14 turkeys to families in need. The organization’s mission is to alleviate hunger in Montgomery County by collecting unused fresh food and redistributing to dedicated food donors throughout the area. Through their work, they are able to feed thousands of residents each year.

Samaritan Inns Fundraising Breakfast

For the fifth consecutive year, President and CEO Jim Davis teamed up with Mike Alto, Senior Vice President of Clark Construction Group, to co-host the Samaritan Inns fundraising breakfast on December 6, 2018, held in Arlington, VA. In partnership with Clark Construction Group, we raised over $44,000 so far in 2018, and donations are expected to continue to come in through the New Year. Samaritan Inns provides services, rehabilitation programs, and shelter for people and their families recovering from addiction and homelessness.
