Rendering of an athletic facility

Project Brief

American University's Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance will be the first new athletics and recreational construction on AU's campus in more than 30 years. Once completed, the state-of-the-art building, along with the Sports Center Annex, will be the cornerstone of the Student Thriving Complex. Located in the heart of campus, this complex sets the standard with an unmatched design that includes basketball courts and a new volleyball/wrestling arena, new locker rooms, a dedicated wrestling room, cutting-edge medicine and training facilities, and more!

The facility will be the university’s first net-zero building—and the first of its kind at any university across DC and the Mid-Atlantic region. The building will generate energy onsite through renewable resources that are equal to or greater than the total energy consumed by its operation. The building is also aiming for LEED-Platinum certification, further solidifying AU's and DAVIS' commitments to sustainability and green building. With innovation in mind, our project team is also utilizing a geothermal ground loop and photovoltaic solar array for maximum energy efficiency! Look for the Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance to complete in late 2025.
