Community Outreach Continues to Grow in 2017
Providing support for our community and the communities we build in has always been a cornerstone of DAVIS’ corporate culture. For more than 50 years, we have worked with and supported local organizations and nonprofits from Rockville to Southeast DC and beyond. This year we established relationships with new-to-us organizations including the ALS Association DC/MD/VA Chapter and Cornerstone Montgomery. The ALS Association is dedicated to providing assistance to patients and their families afflicted with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease, researching new treatments, and finding a cure. Cornerstone Montgomery is the largest and most comprehensive provider of behavioral health services in Montgomery County, MD.
We’re proud to have a continued impact throughout the DC metro area with our active involvement and support of numerous charity events and nonprofits. In addition to financial contributions and extensive in-kind donations, our employees and interns contributed 1,100 hours to over 70 organizations and philanthropic initiatives in 2017.
DCBIA Community Improvement
Each year, hundreds of industry employees come together with the DC Building Industry Association to revive a public gathering place for an underserved neighborhood. This year marked DCBIA’s 25th annual Community Improvement Day, held in the Benning Terrace community. DAVIS volunteers came together with industry peers to help transform a 60-year-old community center and sports activity area to benefit more than 400 families. Working with volunteers from Gilbane, we built a 20-by-30-foot shade structure and planted flowers as part of a larger garden.
DAVIS Annual Charity Golf Tournament
DAVIS’ 4th Annual Charity Golf Tournament was held in September with over 130 participants representing 34 subcontractors and industry friends. With the help of generous sponsors, over $60,000 was raised this year. The proceeds were donated to two longtime nonprofit partners of DAVIS, Nonprofit Village of Rockville and Special Olympics DC. Nonprofit Village provides affordable office space, services, and collaboration opportunities to over 30 nonprofit organizations in the DC region. Special Olympics DC offers sports and health programs at no cost to more than 1,600 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the district. Read more about the Golf Tournament here.
Jubilee Housing
We were proud to work with our long-time friends at Jubilee Housing again this year. We provided holiday gifts for eleven families through the Jubilee Housing Wish List initiative and also volunteered for the Elf Store, which provides children of Jubilee Housing the opportunity to buy gifts for their families at a significantly reduced cost. Volunteers were on hand to help 74 children buy and wrap gifts that will make their way to 47 family members this holiday season. DAVIS was also a 2017 sponsor for the Jubilee Justice Housing Celebration – an event to raise awareness for affordable housing in DC. With over 150 people in attendance, they successfully raised more than $90,000.
Samaritan Inns Fundraising Breakfast
For the fourth consecutive year, President and CEO Jim Davis teamed up with Mike Alto, Senior Vice President of Clark Construction Group, to co-host the Samaritan Inns fundraising breakfast on December 7, 2018, held at the recently completed Museum of the Bible. This year over $40,000 was raised, and donations will continue to come in through the New Year. Samaritan Inns provides services, rehabilitation programs, and shelter for people and their families recovering from addiction and homelessness.
“These programs really work. Each year we see and hear new, inspiring stories. These are our people, from our community. They need our help, so it just makes sense to support them in their time of need.”
–Jim Davis, President + CEO, DAVIS
Nourish Now
DAVIS established a partnership with local nonprofit Nourish Now in 2016 which continued through 2017. Along with company-wide food collection and donation, volunteers spent a day packaging holiday meals with Nourish Now team members. The organization’s mission is to alleviate hunger in Montgomery County by collecting unused fresh food and redistributing it to dedicated food donors throughout the area. Through their work, they are able to feed thousands of residents each year.
